UCL People was the university’s flagship alumni magazine, sent annually to more than 150,000 alumni worldwide.
As Editor, I worked with my colleagues in Communications and Development and Alumni Relations on a complete design and editorial overhaul of the magazine and a move to a new American A4 format for the July 2012 issue.
Once ideas had been agreed for the main features, I drew up editorial briefs that I then used to write several of the pieces myself and to commission external writers to produce the others.
The centrepiece of the issue is a feature comprising a series of personal testimonies from UCL alumni on the Arab Spring and its aftermath, introduced by fellow alumnus and BBC Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen.
Other highlights include an article on the groundbreaking new academy school that UCL is sponsoring and a first-person piece from Professor Jon Butterworth on what it is like to work at CERN.
